Who we are

The Retirees Invitational Golf Group is a club of around 60 senior men who play a tournament round every Wednesday, at 13 to 15 courses around the Bay Area and Monterey — all within about 60 miles of San Jose. Our members run from about 55 to over 90, and handicaps from roughly 5 to 35 and up. Every tournament is flighted by handicap and by the tees you play, so a good day counts whoever you are.

A great group of folks who also like a little competition to hone their golf games.

What membership gets you

Somebody else does the arranging

The year's courses are booked roughly a year in advance and the full schedule is published each December. No ringing round for tee times, no wondering where you are playing next or how to get your name down — it is all set out for you. We normally field six to eight groups of four, and rounds go off from about 8 AM into late morning, so you are usually done by early afternoon.

An official handicap, included

Your annual dues include NCGA membership, so you carry an official index without a separate sign-up to juggle. 2026 dues are $85 for RIGG and the NCGA together, paid in November for the year beginning January 1.

Signing up with the NCGA? If you do not already have an NCGA number, choose RIGG as your club when you register on the NCGA website. Your RIGG dues already cover the NCGA on your behalf, so there is never a separate NCGA subscription for you to pay. The one exception is if you belong to more than one golf club: the NCGA bills a membership through each club, though it refunds part of the extra later in the year. If you are unsure at all, ask us before you sign up — that way no one pays the NCGA twice by mistake.

Rates worked out for you

Green fees are negotiated with each course every year — typically a senior weekday rate that is hard to beat on your own. Many courses include free or reduced-cost range balls, and at several the cart is optional if you would rather walk. A small $3 prize-and-admin fee is added to each green fee, for members and guests alike.

Something to play for

Prizes go to the low-net scores in each flight, and closest-to-the-pin pays $10 on selected holes most weeks. Several times a year we play team competitions — best-ball and similar formats — which carry prizes of their own. Your winnings are tracked for you and shown in the Members area, and the year finishes with a club-hosted luncheon after a December round.

Play with the people you like

Depending on the week's numbers you can usually ask to be paired with particular people — for the company, or to share a car. You sign up for each round on your own dashboard, and if you want a later tee time, or to walk, or to play with a particular group, you just leave a note in plain English when you sign up. The schedulers read them. It helps to get your name down four to eight weeks ahead — the sooner the schedulers know to expect you, the easier you are to fit in, which counts for most while you are still new to us.

You will never need a password. To get into the Members area you type in your email address and we send you a short code. There is nothing to remember and nothing to lose.

How you join

The steps are really just ways of making sure the club and the new member are a good fit for each other.

  1. 1Be recommended by a current member, who acts as your sponsor.
  2. 2Complete and submit the New Member Application.
  3. 3Play as a guest over one or more rounds with two Officers of the club — usually with your sponsor along too.
  4. 4Show that you know the game — the rules and the etiquette.
  5. 5The Board reviews your application and welcomes you in by a majority vote.
  6. 6Send your dues to the Treasurer, and you are in.

From there the Vice President sorts out the rest: you go onto the roster and onto the pairing sheets for each course, and you get access to the Members area. Then you start signing up for Wednesdays. We ask members to play at least 15 times a year, and new members are encouraged to take a turn as a scheduler or collector for one of the courses — it is the fastest way to meet everybody.
