SJ Muni: a scramble, a clinic, and shirts vs. skins
A huge thanks to Clarence B. for his inspired 2-man scramble, the professionally printed cards and the score keeping. A big congratulations to Bob H. and Kevin M. who put on a clinic today…lots of big drives, long birdie putts and scrambling pars…enabling them to shoot in the mid-70's Although it was a tad warm, it was a nice day for golf, and it was coupled with a great turnout. Bob H.'s powerful swing sent his long drive 240 yards, lefty Dave M. put a sweet swing on it, and Kevin M. insisted on making it a game of shirts vs. skins (btw, he insisted I publish that picture…funny). Next up is Spring Valley…so get your money in to Mike S. Bob

Don't we live weather-wise in a great part of the country? Often our CTPs are won by 20 or more feet, so it was great to see Tony L.'s name on the board at a nifty 2' on hole #5. Out there today you'd have seen Lou D.'s innovative putting stance, Mike H. giving his long time buddy Steve T. a swing lesson, and then Sweet Lou swinging it pretty much like Mike described. Nice weather, good turnout — what more could you ask for. Sam A. eagled the par-5 second hole, which was his third eagle in two rounds. I told him if he keeps this up we're going to have to raise our dues to pay for his eagle habit. Ha. Out on 18, Bill B. — godfather of Jackson K. — was eyeing his putt. You may not recognize Bill, because he's been away from the course for a while, but this was a landmark first complete 18-hole round in a year. Welcome back, Bill. New member Stephen T. put a good drive down 11, and Fred G. rolled in yet another good putt on 18. See you next week at Lagos. Some golf news worth a cheer: Jackson K. — godson of RIGG member Bill B. — won the PGA Tour's 3M Open on Sunday in only his third start as a pro, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three strokes and setting a tournament scoring record. The 21-year-old, a three-time national college player of the year at Auburn, first learned the game on Santa Teresa's 9-hole course right here in San Jose. Take a bow, Bill.

Read the President's message →De Laveaga: a team win and a great day of golf
Because I enjoy De Laveaga so much, I was disappointed in the 20-player turnout — but it turned out to be a great day of golf. I love the team competitions, so a huge thank you to Clarence for his professionally-done scorecards, the printed rules, and his quick turnaround of the scores. A big smile from Tony A. was a welcome way to start the day — even if he was collecting our green fees. Tony A., along with Peter G., Gary P. and Tim M., made up the winning team, with a very impressive score. And Sam A. was unloading on one of his many bomb drives — do you give lessons? I can't play Wednesday at Coyote, but I'll be there for the Board meeting afterwards. Enjoy your round.

Bob H. was explaining to my group today how he put together his low round of 77 — great playing, Bob. Good to see Lou T. out there too, chipping up to the 5th green on his way to a very solid round. He's been away from golf with injuries for almost two years, so welcome back, Louis.

Have a day, Mike S. — not only a sizzling 75 with four birdies, but he just missed an ace by four inches on the very tough CTP hole #16. Speaking of aces, Dennis B. told me today that his hole-in-one last week was his second (of many, I hope). And since you asked — Rob P. and I talked with Fred S., who after a long layoff is looking forward to getting back on the course again. A very focused foursome out there today: Reza M., Kevin M., Ron M. and Bob H. And how good is golf when you get to play with one of your best friends, your son and your grandson — with your granddaughter keeping score? I'm in SF next week, so enjoy Bay View.

Mike H., Reza M., Lou D. and I had the privilege of attending Gary N.'s celebration of life today at the family home. We were able to talk with his wife and daughter, who organized the event. Most of those attending were members of the Madres and Padres, a long-standing, family-oriented organization to which Gary and Lou belonged. A photo from the day is in the gallery.

An ace on the 7th at Monterey Pines
Real news out of Monterey Pines today: Dennis B. made a hole-in-one on the 7th. An ace — the rarest shot in this game. Most of us play a lifetime and never card one, so hats off to Dennis. We'll let him buy the round. Closest to the pin went to John H. on #3 at 28 feet and Mike M. on #11 at 27'4". And a pair of net 70s — Don S. and Tim M. — shared the low honors on the day. A good Wednesday all around. See you next week.

Congrats to Bob S. for his low net score of 65. Check that handicap. Ha. Only 21 played — a pretty low turnout for one of the closest and least expensive courses we play. For those who've never had the pleasure of meeting Reza M., who was out for six months with an illness: he's back, and he's up in the photo gallery. Reza, I know what a "green thumb" means — but what does an orange thumb signify? Ha. John H. travels to Japan for work and brought me back a bottle of sake for my birdie juice. Amazingly, my group managed only one birdie — and it wasn't Ed P., it was Bill J., who you'll find in the gallery putting under the watchful eye of Gary P.

Just looking at the scores, I gotta tell you — Spring Valley is no Coyote Creek. The scores were much better today. A reminder: don't forget to record your scores to NCGA. Also — Luis T. is back in the RIGG fold after a hiatus. Look for him on the course next time out. A few faces from the day are up in the photo gallery — see for yourself. Among them: Kevin M., our one-man fashion show; a very focused Mike S. (thanks again, Mike, for doing the draw sheet and collecting the money); and my own group of Rob P. and John H. admiring another long drive from Ed M., the new young guy (sorry, Mike H., you've been superseded).

Great turnout at Spring Valley last week, gentlemen — thank you. A reminder as the season heats up: we're a club first and a competition second. Take a minute to help the newer guys with the local rules, and make a point of introducing yourself to a face you don't know. That's what keeps RIGG the kind of group people want to join. Spring is in full swing
